SKI SEASON IS IN THE AIR!

SKI SEASON IS IN THE AIR!!!!

Taken by British photographer, Sam Shaw, this backflip was performed by fellow Brit, Matt Lee at Sunshine Village, Alberta, Canada last season. Check out Sam's Banff photo blog at:http://ootandabootbanff.tumblr.com/archive/
Okay, the ski season is definitely on the way – my first new ski purchase arrived today! It’s a high-fashion Rossignol jacket by the French designer, JC de Castelbajac for the 1314 collection. In a bright orange-red print, I will be highly visible on the slopes of Alberta, British Columbia and Colorado this winter. Great for photo opps too against that winter white backdrop.

Snow’s already fallen in the Canadian Rockies where my son Fergus is now going to university, giving me a reliable insider resource when I am not actually there. And there have been snow falls photographed in Colorado - as early as Sept 23 for Breckenridge.

Ski resorts are starting to announce opening dates such as:

Nakiska – Oct 26
Keystone – Nov 1
Breckenridge – Nov 8
Marmot– Nov 8
Lake Louise - Nov 8
SunshineVillage – Nov 8
Vail – Nov 22
SunPeaks – Nov 23
Beaver Creek – Nov 27
Silver Star – Nov 28
BigWhite – Nov 28
JacksonHole – Nov 28
AspenSnowmass – Nov 28
MtNorquay – Nov 29
Revelstoke - Nov. 29
Fernie – Nov 30
Panorama – Dec 6
Whitewater – Dec 6
CastleMountain – Dec 13
KickingHorse – Dec 13
Kimberley – Dec 14
Red Mountain – Dec 14

And many of these will have earlier sneak-a-peek openings, weather permitting.

This winter I will be skiing mainly in Canada: Lake Louise, Sunshine, Mt Norquay, Nakiska, Castle Mountain and Marmot Basin in Alberta and also Fernie and Kicking Horse in BC. I hope to squeeze in a trip to Breckenridge, Colorado, too. And, of course, I am always open to suggestions! As an empty-nester, I now have more time to indulge my favourite pastime and my work – both of which are skiing.

Don’t delay in researching and booking your ski trips this season: they give you a raison d'être during the dull days of fall. Check out my resort reports and recommendations in the various tabs above to help you choose the best destination for you and your friends or family. Remember there is no better winter vacation than skiing or snowboarding where you can have “parallel play” with your kids or buddies, everyone getting the best out of their holiday during what could otherwise be the dreariest months of the year.

If anyone is looking for a ski season job this year, a great resource for Banff Lake Louise is Gap Year Canada. Keep checking my blog throughout the fall and winter for some great articles on skiing as well as resort guides.
