Practicality or Panache: Perfect Presents for the Piste this Christmas

Check out the Heat Holders Holiday Gift Guide 2022

If you have a skier or snowboarder on your “to buy for” list this Xmas, you’re lucky! Whether it’s a pair of Heat Holders socks or new Rossignol skis, a protective Seirus face mask or a vibrant SMITH helmet, a day ticket to a favourite resort or a season’s pass like Epic or Ikon, HEAD Legacy ski pants or the Arcade belt to keep them up, your gift will be relevant, appreciated and useful for the next four months or more.

Glorious Lake Louise unisex sized down puffy jacket by AOR

Among this season’s crop of gear, I’ve categorized potential presents as primarily practical or  packed with panache although of course many of them tick both boxes. For this brand in particular - Alchemy of Ride - it is really tough to decide if it is practicality paired with panache or panache-practicality partnership. So I’ll leave you to choose!

Tusk Technical by AOR

In terms of practicality, this Alchemy of Ride TUSK technical two-piece ski suit sports pit zips, hood (with adjustable toggle), powder skirt, adjustable cuffs, toggled waist, water vapour permeability of 10,000, waterproof zippers, inside goggle pocket, inside zip pocket - all the bells and whistles!

But from the panache perspective, this is the only ski brand that can boast artwork based on an original LL Harrison painting of "BLACK TUSK", from Garibaldi Park, Whistler BC. This is the white-on-black version and there is also the reverse black-on-white print available in various styles.

Lynne Harrison produces a limited number of each design across the spectrum of ski pants, bibs, jackets, puffies, vests, base layers, tights, and accessories.

The WOLF down men’s jacket is another example of Lynne’s artistry, this time in the most vibrant colour way you’ll see on the mountain!

Practical for Pants

Arcade was founded on the belief that belts could be designed to function better, last longer and be more comfortable - you can’t get more practical than that! Developed from the ground up with materials built to go everywhere and anywhere, each Arcade belt provides a custom fit, sturdy hold and the right amount of flexibility to move with you.

You can take the belt out of the mountains (they work well for everyday wear, too), but you can't take the mountains out of the belt. Many of the styles feature mountainscapes and fir trees. The peak-themed Adventure belt, for example, is light, stretchy, micro-adjustable, pinch-free and machine washable—with a print inspired by the expansiveness of the open range. Expect to find them in ski shops in your favourite resorts in Canada (Jardines in Sun Peaks, for one) and around the US - or take the belt by the horns, and buy direct from https://arcadebelts.com/

Iconic athlete Lindsey Vonn has teamed up with HEAD Sportswear again to collaborate for a fourth season of flamboyant designs. The concept is Lindsey-style luxury and the perfect blend of sporty utility.

The 2022/23 Legacy Collection By HEAD

The 2022/23 Legacy Collection epitomizes the blend of downhill daredevil with après ski diva, offering new styles and colours that, like Lindsey, carve a bold path both on and off the slopes. Every piece demonstrates Lindsey’s look, from metallics to luscious cashmere and soft faux fur. Examples of her topnotch taste are the slim jet bib pants that perfectly pair with a puffy down jacket, and knit vests and sweaters which emanate elegance.

This season’s new colour selection includes aqua blue, warm shades of brown, gold medal shine, and bold black and white statement combos. The colours, textures, materials and fit make this legacy line a champion. “What I love about the new Legacy Collection is that no matter if you are spending time on the slopes or just relaxing with your friends at après ski you are going to look and feel amazing,” says Lindsey

“We created this collection using premium materials and cutting edge technology to make sure you are supported while skiing but at the same time we have made the designs chic and fun so you look amazing.” Go to https://www.head.com/en_CA/sports/sportswear/winter for more details.

Practical for Piste and Powder

Practical Precision

Probably the most important piste purchase - and a gift that could last for years - is ski boots. Comfortable and effective ski boots, that is - there’s nothing worse than boots that are too loose and don’t connect with the skis properly or too tight and cut off the circulation. I had mine custom fit by All In Skier Services in Fernie about 13 seasons ago - a painstaking process over several days with me testing out the progress at various stages of customization until everything was perfect.

Practical for Prolonged Piste Perseverance!

Volt’s new Frostie II 8V heated glove has a much smaller battery than previous versions. At only $169.95 it’s an affordable price compared with many other brands and I know they work really well after having worn their heated products for many winters in Canada. Volt’s Chris Haffly says they’re the best all purpose heated glove. “They use a smaller battery in size but not in power. Since the batteries are smaller we are able to store them on the underside of the cuff.”

Practical Performance

Founded in Norway in 1877, Helly Hansen has a long history of creating performance-driven gear that's trusted by professionals and helps every skier stay and feel alive in some of the world's harshest outdoor environments. To showcase some of the most innovative and technical gear landing this Winter 2022, they are excited to share the Helly Hansen Winter 2022 Ski Collection lookbook that delves deeper into outerwear, midlayers and base layers designed alongside pro athletes to perform in varying weather, temperatures and activities - professional-grade gear that enables skiers to embrace the elements and enjoy the great outdoors to the full. I will find out personally how effective it is when I am volunteering as a Sun Host this season at Sun Peaks Resort. The uniform, made by Helly Hansen, is sported by the whole team of Sun Hosts who guide visitors around the slopes for free every day all season. I’ll be doing Mondays and I hope to write a few articles about my experiences as the season progresses.
