After seeing miserable motorists stranded in a snow
storm in Colorado, Christian Schauf conceived the idea for a 72-hour survival
kit for use in every unexpected situation from earthquake, to flood, to power
outage, to blizzard. He came up with the SEVENTY2TM Survival System and with
that product the Uncharted Supply Company was born. Expert-tested, the survival kit comes with 35 high quality survival tools including fire starters, water
filtration system, First Aid items, calorie-dense rations and navigation tools.
The company is now run by a Park City-based team
of adventurers and philanthropists intent on turning worst case scenarios into
happy endings. Other products on their site include the 24SEVEN, a more everyday modular backpack with its own space-saving survival kit.
So, why Park City? “I wanted to live in the mountains and with a
direct to consumer brand we could go anywhere with it,” Schauf recounts. “With
Salt Lake, the airport and all the amenities that a big city brings, Park City
operates at a level few small mountain towns can. There's a great network
of entrepreneurs, and a town full of ambitious people.”
The outdoorsy culture
of the local community feeds into the company’s research
and product development. “Our
products are designed to help anyone navigate unforeseen situations. And
nobody is more resourceful and knowledgeable than the mountain town folks,”
says Schauf. “That's a big part of our DNA - the experience that only
comes from living it day in and day out, and we leverage this in the creation
of all that we do.” Using a direct-to-consumer business model, the SEVENTY2TM
has sold in over 150 countries so far. “Our audience tends to trend male and
urban, but at the same time, we've sold to our local and national emergency
response teams, police force, CIA, FBI,” Schauf explains. Locally, the kits are
being snapped up as emergency equipment for the car or for adventurous
expeditions.

With plans to expand to retail later this
year, the Uncharted crew is always on the lookout for new stories, collaborations,
and ideas for innovative ways to present their products to the public. You
might have seen their Facebook and Google ads which have been their main means
of advertising to date.

Team building revolves
around wintersports and al fresco experiences: “Everyone at Uncharted is an
outdoor enthusiast. From ski touring to snowmobiles to mountain bikes to fly
fishing to mountain climbing, it is a big part of our culture and informs
everything we do,” explains Schauf. “We have a powder day rule at the office
and make sure we don't miss the real reason we're living here when conditions
are prime!” Park City is ideal for all of these pursuits with its four-season
sporting appeal: “Park city is awesome. A perfect day
depends on the season, but between mountain biking crest trail, ski touring
around guardsman pass, fly fishing the Weber or snowmobiling up in the Uintas,
you can't go wrong.”
