Uncharted Entrepreneurs in Park City

After seeing miserable motorists stranded in a snow storm in Colorado, Christian Schauf conceived the idea for a 72-hour survival kit for use in every unexpected situation from earthquake, to flood, to power outage, to blizzard. He came up with the SEVENTY2TM Survival System and with that product the Uncharted Supply Company was born. Expert-tested, the survival kit comes with 35 high quality survival tools including fire starters, water filtration system, First Aid items, calorie-dense rations and navigation tools.

The company is now run by a Park City-based team of adventurers and philanthropists intent on turning worst case scenarios into happy endings. Other products on their site include the 24SEVEN, a more everyday modular backpack with its own space-saving survival kit.

So, why Park City? “I wanted to live in the mountains and with a direct to consumer brand we could go anywhere with it,” Schauf recounts. “With Salt Lake, the airport and all the amenities that a big city brings, Park City operates at a level few small mountain towns can. There's a great network of entrepreneurs, and a town full of ambitious people.”

The outdoorsy culture of the local community feeds into the company’s research and product development. “Our products are designed to help anyone navigate unforeseen situations. And nobody is more resourceful and knowledgeable than the mountain town folks,” says Schauf. “That's a big part of our DNA - the experience that only comes from living it day in and day out, and we leverage this in the creation of all that we do.” Using a direct-to-consumer business model, the SEVENTY2TM has sold in over 150 countries so far. “Our audience tends to trend male and urban, but at the same time, we've sold to our local and national emergency response teams, police force, CIA, FBI,” Schauf explains. Locally, the kits are being snapped up as emergency equipment for the car or for adventurous expeditions.

With plans to expand to retail later this year, the Uncharted crew is always on the lookout for new stories, collaborations, and ideas for innovative ways to present their products to the public. You might have seen their Facebook and Google ads which have been their main means of advertising to date.

Team building revolves around wintersports and al fresco experiences: “Everyone at Uncharted is an outdoor enthusiast. From ski touring to snowmobiles to mountain bikes to fly fishing to mountain climbing, it is a big part of our culture and informs everything we do,” explains Schauf. “We have a powder day rule at the office and make sure we don't miss the real reason we're living here when conditions are prime!” Park City is ideal for all of these pursuits with its four-season sporting appeal: “Park city is awesome. A perfect day depends on the season, but between mountain biking crest trail, ski touring around guardsman pass, fly fishing the Weber or snowmobiling up in the Uintas, you can't go wrong.”

Powder Matt: “Winter colder and snowier the better”

Powder Matt in his element
"Do not be afraid to listen on all levels
to all sources": Powder Matt Mosteller

POWDER MATT MOSTELLER is an outdoor adventurer, blogger, author, freelance journalist and Powder Highway-based influencer. This lifelong ski bum with over 40 years on the slopes is also a sought-after writer whose work has been published in countless major city newspapers, magazines and outdoor-centric websites. And, for the past couple of decades, he’s been “chief story wrangler” for Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR) – otherwise known as Senior VP, marketing and resort experience.

When not escaping grizzly bear attacks, running wild rivers in Northern BC, or lost in the Arctic in a mid-winter expedition, Powder Matt can be spotted sipping craft coffee in Fernie, BC and sharing some of his motivational anecdotes. For example: one year, while his friends were busy getting jobs and settling down, a young Matt spent 63 days living in his car so he could ski every day. He’s still accumulating outdoor adventures on a daily basis, and his scintillating stories pop up regularly in the Calgary Herald, Montreal Gazette, Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Vancouver Sun, Explore Magazine, Matador Networks, WestJet,
and many others.

A self-help crusader, Matt is constantly trying to find ways to fight childhood obesity, getting people outside to experience the benefits of Nature that fuel his own boundless vitality and enthusiasm. He runs wilderness retreats for execs and athletes. “I’m a lover of long trails, canoe journeys, mountain tops, and backcountry skiing,” he says - and he loves introducing these activities to the uninitiated of all ages.

Always on the lookout for inspirational projects, Mosteller co-founded a new event last year - Disconnect to Connect  (#TimeOut #DisconnecttoConnect): The first outdoor industry incubator collaboration in Canada, a movement to seek the deeper good in life, influence greater community value through disconnecting, and inner peace through more nature time,” he explains. He also co-founded #MappyHour Canada which has been motivating cityslickers into the mountains since 2015. And, in Kimberley BC, he helped establish KORE - Kootenay Outdoor Recreation Alliance. And, with oodles of endorphin-energy, most of these activities are voluntary on top of his full-time career and busy family life.

His first book - The Adventurer’s Guide to Living a Happy Life – was described by The Calgary Herald as “a kind of handbook for living life to the fullest”. It offers 63 daily meditations to help you broaden your horizons and achieve the 'goosebump' moments in life - sleeping in the car is optional but could be one answer to the affordable housing crunch in ski resorts!

"Do it today as tomorrow is too late": Powder Matt Mosteller

5 Star Reader Review (posted on Amazon): Great guide from one of life's great adventurers - By PG Mon November 5, 2012

“Matt Mosteller is a force to be reckoned with. A famed business leader, adventurer, and skier - he certainly has the resume to merit writing a guide of any sort. But for those of you who haven't met Matt, it's his love and passion for life that made me want to read his book. It's easy to be happy when things are great - chest deep powder days, booming economic times, birthday parties etc --but what makes Matt a truly special person is that he doesn't wait for those moments to bring happiness to his life, he really does bring positive energy and happiness to life every day, and it's infectious. Spend ten minutes with Matt and two things will happen. First, you will know that you want to be around this guy more often. Second, you will want to know what his secret sauce is.

The Adventurer’s Guide to Living a Happy Life reveals how Matt invests in his happiness every day. Matt explains in his natural storyteller voice the lessons he has learned through an adventurous life. He doesn't map out a path to happiness in mystic complexity, he shares with us how he actually brings positive energy and strength to his world every day - through the high points and the low points. This isn't a self-help book filled with platitudes and feel-good thinking about how to be a better you - it is very much a book of verbs and the purpose behind those verbs. From knowing Matt I already knew that he wakes up very early every morning, but this book tells you how and why he does it. Matt doesn't wake up early and run because he should, he does it because he reaps the rewards of energy and endorphins. Matt doesn't eat well because he wants to look good for others, he eats well because it makes him feel better and more alive. Matt doesn't reach out to friends and family because he should, he shares his love and happiness because making others happy gives him fulfillment and enriches the lives of those around him. Reading his positive model for life you begin hearing yourself say ‘yeah, that's true’ – ‘yeah that is when I have felt the happiest.’”

One of the things I love about Powder Matt is his penchant for one-liners, freely distributed on social media, mostly mountain mantras. “Everyday powder”; “Worries ride with you into your office but they're too big to fit in your backpack”; “Let cold and the wild in”; “Nature provides a humbling goodness we need more of”; “Walk the earth. See more. Feel better”; “Doing nothing is flavourless”; and “Always look up - not only is it safer in the backcountry but you must appreciate every step of the way”. He radiates positivity, is quick to say yes, but also has time for co-workers, family, friends, and everyone he meets: “Take care of your crew. Love ‘em and support ‘em,” he advises. “Share more love and joy every day.”
This guy is no powder hog – he shares his powder passion with everyone!
